Julius Leleruk

Post: Science (Standard 5)

Hometown: Baragoi, Samburu North

Mother tongue: Samburu

First teacher in his family: Yes

On becoming a teacher:

When Julius was in secondary school, he dreamed of being a journalist. The fees for the journalism at the college he was accepted to were too high, so he opted for his second choice: teaching. Julius had always admired how teachers shared their knowledge with others and sought to do the same.

Julius started his career in education in 2006 and has been at NWPS since 2008. His first teaching post was in a private school in Isiolo. Julius moved to NWPS through a government placement.

Julius chose to specialize in maths, sciences, home sciences and agriculture after completing the fourteen-subject core curriculum in teaching.

On being surprised about teaching (expectations and Day 1 jitters):
The first day of teaching gave Julius quite a surprise – the students were bigger than he was! He wondered if he would be able to manage the class and be heard among the teen voices. Julius quickly realized that he had “information to deliver” to the students, which settled his nerves and gave him the courage to teach.

On sharing and learning from each other:

Julius would like to share teaching strategies and practices. He is also interested in learning about how teachers at Packer are shaping their careers.
