The third grade team, in conjunction with the art and library specialists, created a yearlong Project Based Learning unit titled Cultures and Storytelling. This unit had an emphasis of global education linking third grade Packer students with The Ndonyo Wasin Primary School, using storytelling, social studies, art, and cultural diversity. We asked our students essential questions such as, “How do the stories from our cultures and communities teach others and us about who we are?” and “How do we preserve and share our stories?” and “How does our environment influence the stories we tell about ourselves and our communities?” Our students connected their previous and ongoing cultural knowledge of The Samburu tribe with their own cultures, with the third grade study of the Lenape Indians, and Lenape Legends. In Library, students were immersed in authentic Samburu legends and visual storytelling to deepen their understanding of how The Samburu share their stories. Finally, students’ visions and interpretations of these stories were brought to life in Art, in which murals were created to be put on display during Packer’s May Day Festival.
