Dixon Lekadaa

Post: English, Science and Social Studies (Standards 4, 5 & 8)

Hometown: Samburu North (same environment)

Mother tongue: Samburu

First teacher in his family: Yes

On becoming a teacher:

Originally Dickson wanted to become a policeman but his father “refused” him. Dickson changed his major in school to become a teacher and has not looked back in the 9 years he has held his post! After 4 years of primary school, 4 years of secondary school and 2 years of his “professional course*” in teaching, Dickson graduated and was placed in his first school. He was transferred to NWPS and is quite pleased with this change since NW is a better school then where he was.

* The requirements for the professional course in educations include 14 subjects: music, arts, crafts, home science, maths, Kiswahili, English, science, social studies, physical education, CRE (Christian Religious Education), professional studies, administration and practical teaching (for exams). Dickson wishes to extend his professional learning to include computer literacy.

On being surprised about teaching (expectations and Day 1 jitters):

Dickson was surprised to find himself nervous during his first days of teaching. The Ministry of Education sends officials to assess new graduates. The inspectors have quite the reputation for being harsh – especially the women!

On sharing and learning from each other:

Dicskon is interested in learning about (our) methods of teaching and what approaches we use to engage our students.
