Having concluded a comprehensive Neighborhood study, first graders compared and contrasted the needs and wants of people in our neighborhood with those of the Samburu people of Ndonyo Wasin. They learned from books, maps, guest speakers and numerous photos that Ndonyo Wasin is a rural community in Kenya, a country in Africa. They learned that Ndonyo Wasin is like their own neighborhood in some ways, with schools, a medical center, a church, a weekly market and a group of permanent homes. The people who live in Ndonyo Wasin have their own ways of meeting their needs and wants. The children came to realize that while our neighborhood’s homes, shops, food and clothing may be different, that all people want to be happy with family and friends. Students combined writing and art to produce drawings, diagrams and a painting to express what they had learned.
