The famous battle here and Lincoln’s address delivered three months after the fighting ended forever altered the destiny of this small town. Additionally, Gettysburg National Military Park, the battlefield administered by the National Park Service, actually surrounds and encompasses the Town of Gettysburg and has inadvertently cemented this small Pennsylvania hamlet in the 19th century.
