Battle at Gettysburg

Civilian reenactors line a hill overlooking the Bushey Farm as the reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg rages in the valley below. 2013

It can be rare to work in a landscape that is seemingly completely devoid of modern elements. The Bushey Farm, just south of the Town of Gettysburg, is a nearly pristine 19th century landscape and like all farms surrounding the town, actually played a role in the battle 150 years ago.

This distant point of view is the perspective period illustrators would have recognized while trying to document the battles of the war sending their correspondences back via telegraph to be published in newspapers around the country.
