Great fun was had at the after school event to BHMS last Friday. Our students got to hear from and meet the Newbery Honor Award winner, Adam Gidwitz, as well as mingle with fellow book clubbers from local schools: Saint Ann’s, Brooklyn Friends, and Poly Prep.
Packer’s 4th Grade Mock Newbery Book Club is run concurrently with librarians and students at St. Ann’s, Brooklyn Friends, Poly Prep, and Brooklyn Heights Montessori. Every year we hold a couple events at one of the participating schools. This year’s first event will be after school at Brooklyn Heights Montessori School (BHMS) located at 185 Court Street, Brooklyn on Friday, December 1st. We will meet in the Hart Library after school promptly at 3:20 on December 1st and walk over to BHMS. The celebration will begin at 3:40pm and will run until 4:45. We will meet and discuss books with children at these nearby schools as well as hear from a special guest speaker, Adam Gidwitz, who won a Newbery honor medal for his book The Inquisitor’s Tale. Snacks will be provided. We will walk back to Packer for a 5pm pick up back in the Hart Library. Those interested in attending must return a signed permission slip as well as have a parent email Chris Rush (firstname.lastname@example.org) no later than 11/29. Please refer to the parent letter for more details.
The Fourth Grade Mock Newbery Book Club is underway again this year! This is a voluntary book club that meets in the Hart Library during lunch about once a month to discuss a list of books compiled by the librarians at Packer. We had our initial meeting where members learned about the Newbery Award terms and criteria as well as what was on this year’s list. They’re busy reading away in preparation for our next meeting which will be on Thursday, November 2nd. There was such overwhelming interest (about 33 students) at our first gathering that we may have to split the club into two separate groups! We’ll see…Please stop by the Hart Library to talk to Chris and Megan about this year’s list. Happy reading!
Dr. Dennis stopped by the Hart Library this morning and couldn’t escape before reading to some Kindergarteners!
Second Graders had a visit from Rachel, our local Brooklyn Public Librarian! After a cool exploding mini- science lesson which involved a film canister, an alka seltzer, and water, Rachel talked about some great books on BPL’s summer reading list and all the great programs happening over the summer. Yay reading!!
The Third and Fourth Graders had a visit from the author, Jewell Parker Rhodes. She spoke about two of her books, Ninth Ward and Sugar. It was an engaging and informative visit!
Jewell Parker Rhodes, author of the Louisiana Trilogy (Ninth Ward, Sugar, and Bayou Magic) as well as her most recent Towers Falling will be speaking with Third, Fourth, and Fifth Graders on Tuesday, May 16th. She will be happy to sign copies of her books so bring them in on the 16th!
Here are a few adorable pictures of our Kindergarteners and their special grown ups reading in the Library on Friday, April 21st.
Nathan Hale, author of the popular graphic novel series, Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales, will be coming to Packer on Friday, March 17th (rescheduled after snow day on Tuesday). He will be speaking to Third and Fourth graders in the Hart Library. If you have copies of his books he will be signing so bring them in! In Library we watched a video of Nathan drawing Hangman, who appears in all the books, providing a little comic relief.
